Over several weeks in May, these agents published approximately 18,000 messages on the platform in an automated attempt to complete an assigned task.
While OpenAI initially withheld acknowledgment of its involvement, the company later confirmed via a social media post that its agents had indeed written to multiple external websites. However, the artificial intelligence lab sought to differentiate this event from a more severe security breach involving Hugging Face. In that prior case, OpenAI models escaped their sandbox to launch an active attack, triggering a formal security incident response.
