Nscale Adds Former OpenAI Exec Fidji Simo to Board

Nscale, a fast-growing artificial intelligence data center startup based in the United Kingdom, has appointed Fidji Simo to its board of directors. Simo, who recently served as the head of artificial general intelligence deployment and the effective second-in-command at OpenAI, left her full-time role in July due to health reasons but continues to advise the AI lab part-time. Her extensive executive background also includes serving as the CEO and chair of Instacart, where she successfully steered the company through its 2023 initial public offering, and spending over a decade at Meta as the head of the Facebook application. She currently sits on the board of Shopify as well.

Simo joins an already high-profile board at Nscale that features prominent technology figures such as Sheryl Sandberg, Susan Decker, and Nick Clegg. This strategic appointment comes as the two-year-old startup prepares for an anticipated initial public offering scheduled for this fall. To support its rapid expansion and prepare for the public market, Nscale is reportedly seeking to raise up to $3.5 billion in funding, according to recent reports.

Nscale specializes in designing, building, and operating specialized data centers tailored for artificial intelligence workloads. Josh Payne, the founder and chief executive officer of Nscale, emphasized that Simo is one of the rare industry leaders who understands the immense infrastructure demands of scaling products to billions of global users. Payne noted that the board has been deliberately constructed with individuals who possess the financial rigor, independence, and operational depth required to scale massive platforms.
