Beijing-based Moonshot AI, the creator of the popular Kimi assistant, is aiming to reach a $2 billion annualized revenue run rate by the end of this year. According to a Bloomberg report, this aggressive target represents a doubling of the company's reported revenue run rate of $1 billion recorded in August. Much of this projected growth is driven by the commercial traction of its K3 open-weight model, which launched this past summer. Although K3 has experienced a minor dip in usage over recent months, data from OpenRouter indicates that the model still generates up to 300 billion tokens every day.

While a $2 billion run rate is a significant milestone for a Chinese AI developer, it remains far behind the financial scale of major US rivals. Recent reports estimate OpenAI's annualized revenue at $40 billion and Anthropic's at $65 billion. Because Moonshot distributes its model weights freely, its profit margins are inherently tighter than those of competitors utilizing closed-weight systems. For machine learning practitioners, Moonshot's trajectory suggests that open-weight architectures can sustain viable commercial ecosystems, even if they yield lower margins than proprietary frontier models.

However, Moonshot's rapid development has not been without controversy. Anthropic recently accused the startup of executing an unauthorized model distillation campaign. The American AI safety lab alleged that Moonshot routed approximately 300,000 user requests from Kimi directly to Anthropic's Claude Opus model, essentially substituting the proprietary model for its own. In total, Anthropic claims that Moonshot harvested more than 23 million responses from its models to train its own systems, highlighting the ongoing legal and ethical tensions surrounding open-weight training practices.
