Anthropic partners with HHMI and Allen Institute

Anthropic has partnered with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Allen Institute to integrate its Claude AI model into biological research and accelerate scientific discovery.

Anthropic is launching two flagship life sciences partnerships with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and the Allen Institute. These collaborations aim to embed Anthropic's Claude model directly into scientific workflows, helping researchers manage massive datasets from single-cell sequencing and brain connectomics. By deploying Claude as an active assistant in planning and executing experiments, the initiatives aim to transition manual data synthesis into automated, AI-augmented processes.

At HHMI, the collaboration will center on the Janelia Research Campus as part of the AI@HHMI initiative launched in 2024. The teams will develop specialized AI agents designed for laboratory environments, connecting Claude with scientific instruments and analysis pipelines. Meanwhile, the Allen Institute will work with Anthropic to build multi-agent AI systems. These systems will coordinate specialized agents to handle multi-omic data integration, manage knowledge graphs, model temporal dynamics, and design experiments, potentially reducing months of manual data analysis down to mere hours.

To support these efforts, Anthropic is opening a research preview of its Model Hardware Standard (MHS), which provides a shared specification for AI agents to safely operate physical laboratory devices. Additionally, the company is offering free Claude access to 10,000 scientists globally. Under this program, verified principal investigators can access a Claude Team subscription and add their team members to Standard seats for free, or upgrade to Premium seats for $15 per month, for up to one year.

Alongside these scientific initiatives, Anthropic is launching a $5 million grant program. This funding will support independent research investigating how artificial intelligence technologies impact the overall wellbeing of users.
