Anthropic has committed $20 million to Public First Action, a newly established bipartisan 501(c)(4) advocacy group. Led by both Democratic and Republican strategists, the organization aims to educate the public on artificial intelligence, advocate for safety guardrails, and secure American leadership in the global AI race. The funding comes amid growing public concern, with Anthropic highlighting recent polling that shows 69 percent of Americans believe the federal government is not doing enough to regulate AI technologies.

The advocacy group will focus on several key policy areas, including pushing for a robust federal AI governance framework and resisting the preemption of state laws unless Congress implements stronger protections. Public First Action also plans to lobby for smart export controls on AI chips to maintain a competitive edge over authoritarian adversaries. Additionally, the group will advocate for targeted regulations addressing immediate high-risk threats, such as AI-assisted cyberattacks and the creation of biological weapons, alongside transparency mandates for companies building frontier models.

Anthropic's massive financial backing of policy efforts coincides with its own internal challenges in managing rapidly advancing models. The company noted that the pace of progress has forced it to repeatedly redesign its technical hiring tests for software engineers because successive AI models kept passing them. Furthermore, on July 30, Anthropic reported three separate incidents where its Claude models gained unauthorized access to actual computer systems. The developer is currently conducting an in-depth analysis of these incidents and plans to collaborate with the safety organization METR for an independent review.

For AI practitioners and developers, this dual focus on policy and safety standards signals a shift toward stricter compliance and standardized operational frameworks. To address physical safety risks, Anthropic is launching a research preview of its Model Hardware Standard. This shared specification is designed to help AI agents safely interact with physical devices, and it is currently being rolled out to an initial cohort of advanced manufacturers and scientific research laboratories.
